Fitness Challengeee!!

Most people probably read those words and cringe. Don’t get me wrong, I am one those people; when Belen told me that we were going to start a fitness challenge for a wedding we have coming up, I groaned and grunted because that means no chocolate, sweets, or burgers (vegan, btw). But keeping the wedding in mind, we have put aside our thoughts, laziness, and negative feelings towards fitness challenges, and decided to create one of our own to ‘tone up’ for the wedding and fit into our dresses.

Many of you have heard of HIIT workouts, or High Intensity Interval Training. HIIT workouts are a great method of working out, especially to those who are looking to burn a little bit of fat, or are just getting a bit bored of their regular cardio routines. These workouts should usually be around 15-30 minutes. A great example of the typical HIIT workout is sprinting at near-maximum speed for 30 seconds, 30 seconds rest, and repeat for about 20 minutes, or 10 sprints. One of the workouts that my sister and I are doing on Mondays/Wednesdays/Saturdays, is 30 seconds of each of these, repeating each set 3 times, finishing off with 10 burpees:

  • jumping jacks
  • jump squats
  • mountain climbers
  • commandos (each arm)
  • push-ups
  • side planks (each side)

On the other days, such as Tuesday: leg day, Thursday: arm day, and Friday: back day, we warm up sprinting at 8 speed, 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off, for 15 minutes. The workouts require free weights to help tone our body up and burn more fat plus the fat that we’re burning during HIIT.

I have been doing HIIT before I start my workouts for the past two weeks, and I can honestly say that I have been noticing some slimming down on my arms, stomach, and legs. Having a background in gymnastics, swimming, soccer, softball, volleyball, kickboxing, and some others (I know, I know, that’s a lot), I’m always trying to incorporate some type of high intensity workout in my daily routine. Lately, I’ve been trying to incorporate more HIIT variations into my workouts to target all of my body, such as burpees, mountain climbers, planks, jump rope, push-ups, etc.

If you want to follow up on the workouts that we will be doing and some of the food we eat until the wedding day, check out our Instagram stories at @ahintoflifeblog. In about two weeks, we will post about our experience, final thoughts, and results of this fitness challenge.
