Hi Miami! Living in Miami has us used to the sun and the sunshine makes us happy and full of energy so when we have days and days and days of rain in the afternoons when you are feeling your caffeine fade away… the struggle is real! This week/weekend is not one of our best ones as you may know a Hurricane is heading our way! But don’t panic Miami because thankfully there are many ways to prepare for this kind of situations and the truth is we are pretty much experts because we go through this preparation a couple of times a year… although in the past couple of years the storms have missed us!
It’s been a while since an actual Hurricane has hit Miami and let me tell you, the world has changed!! Technology is our best friend and it’s here to keep us updated and in constant communication with our friends and family; of course, most of the time we don’t really use our phones to stay up to date with the news (I’m so guilty of this!) I know it’s a shame but having a blog and a full time job in marketing pretty much has me navigating the social networks all day long and yet, somehow I don’t find the time to read the news, as I assume is the case with some of you as well… I was so much younger when Hurricane Wilma (actually 10 years ago!) hit us, but some of the most resourceful things to have in the house were water to keep everyone hydrated including your pets (don’t forget about getting enough water for your dogs or cats and food for them also!), flashlights and candles in case the lights went off because with the shutters covering your windows, there’s no light in the house and you will need it when you are preparing some food or even if you just want to play a board game with your family. Make sure to have a first aid kit! This sounds dramatic because you are covering your house up with shutters or wood boards but truthfully a little rock can create a dent in your ceiling or window so you just always have to prepared. Food is really important; make sure everything you get at the grocery store is already pre-cooked and easy to serve. Electricity might not work, so you will have to eat lots of Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches, tuna, chips and bread; yummy!

The Hurricane weather is common for us Floridians but it affects us in different ways in our lives and every time another Hurricane comes around we seem overwhelmed with the number of things we have to do in such little time! For example, the traffic gets insane! Everyone seems to remember they have a car and that their fridge is empty so the lines at gas stations and the parking lines at the grocery store make you want to give up and just head home. I waited in line for one hour at the gas station and the only type of gas available was the most expensive one; thank God the prices are not too high lately. Schools are closed, offices are semi-closed and travel plans are cancelled! If you had a trip planned for this upcoming long-weekend like me, I’m sorry 🙁 let’s just keep our hopes up that we can get refunded or at least be able to re-schedule everything! So, of course or social life is put on hold; restaurants and bars must be really sad and frustrated but the happy times come after the storm! People run out of their homes after a couple of days of hibernation and if nothing major happened, the social life will be popping right up in miami style!
