How much water does your body really need

Have you thought about this? Seriously though. There’s that rule about 8 glasses a day, then there’s the other one about 1/2 your body weight in ounces but to be truly honest, it’s not working for me. The last couple of months, I’ve been THIRSTY and I wanted to know how much water my body really needs. So, I researched and here’s what I found:

+ Water makes up 60% of your body  – so this is important. keep learning!

  • Water gets rid of wastes through urination, perspiration and bowel movements
  • Water keeps your body temperature normal
  • Water lubricates and cushions joints
  • Water protects sensitive tissues

+ Basically, our anatomy uses water to cleanse out toxins and keep us moving throughout the day. but, did you know? FUN FACT: You also lose water by simply breathing??? So, while our body is made up of 60% water, we are constantly flushing that water out which means, we need to replenish. Replenish FAST.

As you know, I’ve been doing the BBG workout from Kayla Itsines and have noticed, it’s been really hard to quench my thirst. My mouth and skin feel dry ALL the time so, I started keeping track of my water intake. Turns out, on a normal day, I drink between 75 oz to 90 oz of water. Now, if we follow the “traditional” norms of drinking water, I’m drinking waay more than necessary yet, I don’t feel like it’s enough; 8 glasses of water a day = 64 oz and half my body weight in water=62.5 oz.

Another piece of research, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is:

  • About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids for men
  • About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women

+11.5 cups of water = 92 oz

Now, apparently (something else I didn’t know) 20% of water intake comes from foods (fruits and vegetables) and we should take those fluids into account when we count the amount of water we drink a day but, I’ve decided not to count my water intake from foods and vegetables because if that were completely true, I wouldn’t feel thirsty all the time; you get me?

+If you do decide to count food intake as water on your everyday, here are some foods that count:

  • Watermelon
  • Spinach
  • Milk
  • Juices
  • Herbal Teas
  • Coffee
  • Sports Drinks

Again, I will not be counting my water intake based on these foods because they are not plain water but, this is up to you. Also, sports drinks are SO sugary (I will do a post about sports drinks another time)

Finally, we know we need to drink more water and that peeing, sweating, moving and breathing cause us to lose water but, when else should we be aware that we we need to drink more than usual?

  • When eating high sodium foods (salty things)
  • Asparagus
  • Alcohol
  • If you are feeling HANGRY
  • If your pee is too yellow
  • Dry mouth & bad breath
  • Chapped lips
  • Headache
  • Dry skin
  • If you are feeling tired throughout the day
  • When you feel thirsty?? Drink water, not soda!

+ Case in point, we ALL need more water in our bodies. That old rule about 8 glasses of water a day, is out of touch with reality.

++ I will do the 11.5 cups in plain fluids. WATER, here I come.

And you? What’s your take on water intake??
